School has been out for a few months now. During the summer vacation, Ricky has gone camping with his grandma Nina and grandpa Bill. Ricky had been going camping since he was six. Little Ricky considers himself a camping veteran because this will be Ricky's third year. Ricky loved camping so much that he did not even care that his birthday was right in the middle of the camping trip, which was at the beginning of August. Ricky was just waiting for grandma to call and let him know when they were leaving.
Ricky has had one problem camping. That was the long, long walk to the restroom, which they called the outhouse. The campsite was at a place called Kinzua Dam. Kinzua Dam has a lot of woods surrounding it. It also has wild animals that scare little Ricky. So that summer Ricky was going to prepare a little early for his camping trip.
"Mom, can I search through the boxes in the attic for things I might need for my camping trip?" asked Ricky. "Yes, you can, son, but make sure you do not make a mess, ok," replied Mom. "Yes, Mother, thank you," Ricky responded.
Ricky started searching in the boxes for things he might use to scare off the wild animals. As he was searching in the boxes, he found an air horn. "This should be loud enough to scare away the wild animals," Ricky thought to himself. Ricky knew the air horn would run out of air in a couple of days. The camping trip was always two weeks long. So little Ricky kept looking for something else to take with him. Ricky searched and searched till he came across some old cloth diapers. The old diapers used to be his younger sister's. He thought he would not have to use the outhouse if he used the diapers, but Ricky knew if he used them, his cousins would make fun of him. A kid his age should not wear diapers. So little Ricky changed his mind and put them back in the box. Then in a box in the corner, he found a bullhorn. Ricky tested the bullhorn to make sure that the horn and batteries worked. "Testing one, two, three. Testing one, two, three." It works. It works," Ricky yelled out in joy. The bullhorn also had a siren. So he tested it. BOOP, BOOP, BOOP. Little Ricky was so happy he found something he could use.
Ricky took both of the horns down to his room. He put them on a box he had ready for his mom. That box was full of old toys and clothes for the yard sale his mom and dad's friend was having. "Mom, can I take a pack of batteries from the junk drawer with me camping?" asked Ricky. "Yes, you can." "By the way, your grandpa called. He wants you to come over this afternoon to help him set up the new tent he bought for the trip. It's called The Galaxy 2000," Mom told Ricky.
So Ricky went to his grandpa Bill's house to help them get ready for the trip. While they were in the backyard, grandpa realized the size of the tent was too big. Grandpa explained to Ricky, "Sorry, we will have to wait till we are at Kinzua to set it up. My yard is too small for The Galaxy 2000." "Galaxy 2000, what a name for a tent," snickered Ricky. "Yes, it is an odd name, but this tent has everything we will need," Grandpa replied.
