A Great Passion for Animals

Tolerance Pixar style

Mary, a curious nine-year-old, discovers the wonders of nature in her backyard, but a problem arises when she realizes she can't understand why the animals behave the way they do. Determined to learn, she faces obstacles and moments of doubt but eventually finds a way to connect with her animal friends, leading to an important lesson in tolerance and understanding.

The garden behind the house hid its own secrets: nests, tunnels dug into the ground, anthills, and ponds. Nature always offered surprises within reach of the hand. One day, a young hedgehog crossed our gate. The little hedgehog didn’t have a name, so we called him Dickie and fed him milk and fresh eggs.

The hedgehog ate with great appetite until one day, we discovered he had run away. Dickie had hidden among the leaves of the vegetable patch. From then on, I prepared his meals and let’s hope that Tabitha, the cat, doesn’t meet him!.

I started thinking about how many animals were living around us: fireflies in the summer evenings, snails in the garden, and ants marching around tirelessly. They were all part of my great interest in the natural world. Observing them made me realize how fascinating these creatures were.

One morning, I discovered a beautiful collection of snail shells, all different in size. In my enthusiasm, I filled a jar with snails, taking care of them by giving them lettuce leaves.

However, one day, I noticed that some of the snails were no longer moving. I decided to free them, opening the jar and letting them crawl away. It was the right choice, giving them their freedom.

My greatest curiosity came when I observed tadpoles in the small pond. Watching their tiny tails wagging and how they transformed into frogs was an unforgettable experience.

Each day brought new thoughts, like wondering how the small animals breathed underwater or what the world looked like from their perspective. My love for observing animals led me to invent games, imagine stories, and ultimately dream of becoming a scientist who could study and protect all these amazing creatures in real life.

Mary spent the next few days sitting silently in the garden, allowing the animals to come and go as they pleased. Slowly, she began to notice patterns and behaviors she hadn't seen before. "I see now!" she whispered excitedly as she watched the ants work together.

Mary shared her findings with her family. "I learned that animals have their own ways of living, and we can understand them if we're patient," she said proudly.

Mary's journey taught her that understanding and tolerance are important in connecting with others, whether they're people or animals. She continued to observe and learn, dreaming of one day becoming a scientist. "I'll always cherish these lessons," she promised, feeling grateful for the wisdom she gained.
