Schmidt, a mini schnauzer with black fur, lived in an animal shelter. Every day, he watched other dogs go home with families. Schmidt felt lonely and wondered when his turn would come. He dreamed of playing in a garden and snuggling on a cozy couch. - "Will today be the day?" Schmidt asked himself.
But the families always seemed to walk past Schmidt. They chose the bigger dogs, or the fluffier ones. Schmidt felt invisible and sad. He wondered why no one wanted him. - "Am I not good enough?" Schmidt whispered.
One sunny day, a family came in looking very excited. Schmidt wagged his tail, hoping they would notice him. But they walked over to a fluffy dog instead. Schmidt sighed and lay down, feeling even lonelier. - "Maybe tomorrow," he thought.
Another day, a little girl pointed at Schmidt. Schmidt's heart leapt with joy. But her mom shook her head and led her away. Schmidt felt his heart sink again. - "Why not me?" Schmidt wondered.
Yet another family came, this time with a boy and a girl. Schmidt sat up straight, trying to look his best. They smiled, but their eyes wandered to the playful poodle nearby. Schmidt's hope faded once more. - "I just want a chance," Schmidt thought.
Days turned into weeks, and Schmidt's loneliness grew. He missed having someone to play with. Schmidt watched as the shelter slowly emptied, leaving only a few dogs. - "Will I ever find a home?" Schmidt asked the moon.
Schmidt lay in his bed, tired of hoping. He decided maybe he would never find a family. His heart felt heavy and sad. Just then, a kind voice spoke to him. - "Don't give up, little one," said a friendly old cat.
Schmidt listened to the cat's wise words. He realized he couldn't give up hope. Schmidt decided to try one last time. He would be patient and wait for the right family. - "I'll keep hoping," Schmidt promised.
