Nolan was a curious little boy living in Jerusalem while Jesus was alive on earth. One day, he stood with a crowd, listening to Jesus tell stories about how to love God and your neighbors. In one particular story, Jesus talked about a man, finding another man in a ditch, who looked differently than the man who found him. The man took him home and cared for him until he was all better. Jesus said that this was what it meant to love your neighbor. That even when a person looked different than you, you should care for him or her. Nolan was amazed by the stories and wanted to follow Jesus's teachings. But how could he, being just a little boy, show love to his neighbors? This question puzzled him.so
The next day, Nolan was playing outside when he saw a little boy standing next to the path in front of his house crying. The boy was holding the reins of a little donkey colt. Nolan asked, - What’s wrong? The boy said he was lost and couldn’t find his family. He told Nolan that he and his family were with a group of people traveling to a big religious festival in Jerusalem when he got lost. The little boy had a different skin color than Nolan and wore different clothes yet none of it mattered to Nolan. He had been to one of Jesus’s story times when Jesus told him and the other children that every child was loved by God. So Nolan remembered what Jesus said about loving your neighbor and decided to help. But where would he start.?
Nolan took the little boy by the hand and said let’s go to town and find the festival. They walked for a while down the dusty road until they were at the edge of the town. The first place they went to was a little market where he and his mom and his brothers and sisters bought flour that his mom used to make delicious bread! He immediately recognized the owner so he asked him, did you see some people dressed in clothing like my friends clothes that came by here going to the festival? The owner said why yes I did! They even stopped by and bought some food to take with them to the festival! Nolan and his new friend and his tiny donkey all got so excited!
The boys left the shop and headed to where the festival was at the end of the town. Nolan’s dad worked in the town as a carpenter where he built furniture and repaired wagons and on this day he was carrying his carpenter tools going towards the festival. When Nolan saw him he yelled “dad!”Nolans dad turned around and saw Nolan and his friend and his friends little donkey. He said Nolan, what are you doing son? Nolan’s dad had heard the stories that Jesus told and even worked with him on some carpentry projects because Jesus was a carpenter too. Nolan’s dad couldn’t help but notice the little boy and his donkey. He noticed also that the little boy had a different skin color as well. He then remembered that Nolan was sitting next to Jesus when Jesus told them that each child was important to God, no matter their skin color. Oh, his dad was so very proud!
Nolan’s dad looked at Nolan’s new friend and his donkey and asked the little boy, where are your parents? The little boy said that he and his donkey were left behind when they had stopped for breakfast. Nolan’s dad saw how very sad he was and he nealt down and put his arms around the little boy and said to him “I have a surprise for you!”
When Nolan first saw his dad, he was walking towards the festival at the end of the town. But little did Nolan know what project his dad was going to work on. Nolan’s dad stood up and said to them you boys follow me. I am going to repair a wagon that has broken down. Within a short time, as they approached the end of the town, there appeared before them a crowd of people, with beautifully colored clothes, and in the midst of the crowd was the little boys mom and dad. He ran as fast as he could, yelling out to them with the little donkey running close behind. They bent down and picked him up and he was so very glad to see them! Nolan’s dad had been asked to go and fix the wagon of the people with brightly colored clothes and dark skin who had traveled a long way for the festival. He was so very proud of Nolan for doing what Jesus did in caring for a person who was different because that is what Jesus said to do.
