Chantelle was nervous on her first day at her new school. She walked into the classroom, her heart pounding. She hoped to make new friends, but everyone seemed too busy to notice her. During recess, she sat alone, watching the other kids play. " - Why is it so hard to make friends?" Chantelle wondered.
As the day went on, Chantelle tried to join a group playing hopscotch. " - Can I play too?" she asked softly. But the children were too engrossed in their game to hear her. Feeling disheartened, she stepped back, adjusting her glasses nervously. " - Maybe they don't like me," she thought.
Later, she tried to join a group of girls drawing on the sidewalk. " - Can I draw with you?" Chantelle asked, smiling hopefully. The girls glanced at her but continued their drawing without a word. Disappointed, Chantelle walked away, feeling invisible. " - I'll never fit in here," she whispered to herself.
By lunchtime, Chantelle felt ready to give up. She sat alone at a table, picking at her sandwich. " - Maybe I should just sit by myself forever," she sighed. Her eyes welled up with tears, but she quickly wiped them away. " - Why does this have to be so hard?" she muttered.
Just then, a girl named Thandi approached her. " - Hey, want to play with us?" Thandi asked with a warm smile. Surprised, Chantelle nodded eagerly. " - Really? You mean it?" she asked, her eyes lighting up. Thandi nodded, " - Come on, it'll be fun!"
Chantelle joined Thandi and her friends in a game of tag. " - You're it!" Thandi laughed, tagging Chantelle. For the first time, Chantelle felt included and happy. " - I can't believe I almost gave up," she thought, smiling as she ran. By the end of the day, Chantelle realized she had made a wonderful friend.
