Gabby’s Job

Tolerance Watercolor style

A summer story about a silver Labrador named Gabby who works on a charter boat in Block Island, Rhode Island, helping families catch fish and see the island's beauty. Gabby must learn tolerance when faced with unexpected challenges.

Gabby, a silver Labrador with a floral collar, loved her job as the first mate on Captain Joe's charter boat. One sunny day, the boat was full of excited families ready for a fishing trip around Block Island. But Gabby noticed a problem: some kids were arguing about who would catch the biggest fish. 'I want to catch the biggest fish!' one kid shouted.

Gabby tried to calm them down by wagging her tail and giving each child a reassuring lick. 'We need to work together,' she thought. But the kids kept arguing, making Gabby worried. 'What if this ruins the trip?' she wondered. Captain Joe looked at Gabby and said, 'We need to find a way to make everyone happy.'

Gabby remembered a special spot where fish were plenty. 'Maybe if everyone catches a fish, they'll stop arguing,' she thought. They sailed to the spot, but the kids were still grumpy. Gabby barked to get their attention. 'Let's try fishing here!' she wagged her tail excitedly.

Everyone cast their lines, but the fish were not biting. 'This isn't working,' one kid said sadly. Gabby felt the pressure. 'I need to make this fun for everyone,' she thought. She fetched a ball and started playing with the kids. 'Let's play while we wait!' she barked.

The kids laughed and played, but soon got tired. 'We want to catch fish, not play games,' said another child. Gabby felt her heart sink. She looked at Captain Joe, who was deep in thought. 'I have to find another way to bring everyone together,' Gabby decided.

Gabby saw a family of dolphins swimming nearby. 'Maybe this will cheer them up,' she thought. She barked and pointed towards the dolphins. The kids ran to the side of the boat, excited to see the dolphins. 'Wow, look at them!' one kid shouted.

The dolphins' playful jumps and splashes brought smiles to everyone's faces. 'This is amazing!' a child exclaimed. But soon, they remembered the fishing and got upset again. 'We still haven't caught any fish,' they grumbled. Gabby felt the weight of their disappointment.

Gabby noticed the sun was setting and the sky was turning orange. 'We don't have much time left,' she thought. She barked to get Captain Joe's attention. 'Maybe we can teach them patience,' she thought. Captain Joe nodded and said, 'Let's try one last time, but we need to be patient.'

The kids cast their lines again, this time more calmly. Gabby sat beside them, wagging her tail. 'We can do this together,' she thought. Suddenly, one of the kids felt a tug on their line. 'I got one!' the child shouted excitedly. Everyone rushed to help.

With teamwork, they reeled in a big fish. 'We did it!' they cheered. Gabby barked happily and wagged her tail. 'See what we can do when we work together?' Captain Joe said. Gabby felt proud but knew there was still more to teach.

The kids were happy but still wanted to catch more fish. 'What if we don't catch another?' one asked worriedly. Gabby felt their concern. 'We have to keep trying,' she thought. Captain Joe said, 'Sometimes you won't catch anything, but that's okay.'

Gabby saw a seagull flying overhead and got an idea. 'Maybe if we follow the seagull, we'll find more fish,' she thought. She barked and pointed towards the bird. 'Let's follow the seagull!' she barked. The kids eagerly agreed and they set sail again.

The seagull led them to a quiet cove surrounded by tall rocks. 'This looks like a good spot,' Captain Joe said. The kids cast their lines and waited. This time, the fish started biting quickly. 'I got one!' 'Me too!' the kids shouted.

Everyone caught a fish, and the boat was filled with laughter and cheers. 'This is the best day ever!' a child exclaimed. Gabby barked happily, her tail wagging furiously. Captain Joe smiled and said, 'Thank you, Gabby. You taught us all a great lesson.'

As they headed back to shore, Gabby felt proud of her job. 'We learned to be patient and work together,' she thought. The kids petted Gabby and thanked her. 'You're the best first mate ever!' one said. Gabby barked happily in agreement.

Back at the dock, families waved goodbye and promised to come back. Gabby watched them leave, feeling happy and content. 'I can't wait for our next adventure,' she thought. Captain Joe patted her head and said, 'You did great today, Gabby.'
