George and Ruby sat under the tree. - Why won't Whiskers come down? asked Ruby. - Maybe we were too loud, George said. They waited, but Whiskers stayed high up. George felt worried. - I just want to play, George sighed.
The day grew darker, and Whiskers still didn't come down. Ruby tried to climb but slipped. - Oops! Ruby giggled. George tried barking softly, but Whiskers still hid. - Maybe Whiskers doesn't want to be friends, George said sadly. Ruby looked at George with worried eyes.
George felt very sad. - Maybe we should stop trying, he said. Ruby nodded slowly. They both sat quietly. George looked at the stars. - I wish Whiskers would play with us, he whispered. Ruby licked George's cheek, trying to cheer him up.
Suddenly, a wise old owl flew by. - Be gentle and patient, the owl hooted. George's eyes sparkled. - Let's try being calm, Ruby! George said. They sat quietly, wagging their tails softly. Slowly, Whiskers climbed down the tree.
Whiskers reached the ground and sniffed at George and Ruby. George wiggled his nose. - Want to play? he barked gently. Ruby smiled and wagged her tail. Whiskers purred softly. Together, they ran and played under the moonlight.
