Grace Faces Her Fear
Grace, an adventurous girl from the suburbs of Seattle, must confront her fear of bloodwork. With the help of a special courage band and her supportive mom, Grace learns that bravery can overcome even the scariest challenges.
Grace was a brave girl who loved to explore. But there was one thing that made her a bit nervous – going for her bloodwork. Grace had heard about bloodwork. There were needles and tubes. It sounded a little scary, but Grace didn’t want fear to stop her.
One day, Grace’s mom said it was time for her bloodwork. Grace felt nervous, but she took a deep breath. Her mom handed her a special gift – a soft courage band. The courage band had a brave lion on it. Grace put it on her arm and felt braver right away.
- Why do I have to go for bloodwork? Grace asked. - It helps the doctors make sure you're healthy, her mom replied. At the doctor’s office, Grace saw the needles and tubes, but she felt brave. She looked at her courage band and smiled. When the bloodwork started, Grace closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Grace felt a small pinch but kept thinking about her courage band and the brave lion. But then the nurse said they needed to try again because they couldn't get enough blood the first time. - I don't think I can do this, Grace whispered. Her mom squeezed her hand and smiled. - You're doing great, just one more try, her mom said.
Grace considered giving up. She felt tears welling up in her eyes. - I can't do it, Grace said. The nurse knelt down and showed her a sticker of a brave lion. - You can have this when we're done, the nurse said kindly. Grace took a deep breath and nodded.
Grace closed her eyes again and thought about her courage band and the brave lion. She felt another small pinch but stayed still. - All done! the nurse said with a smile. Grace opened her eyes and saw the sticker in her hand. - I did it! Grace exclaimed. She was proud and knew she could be brave anytime she needed her courage band.
