Dedications: This book is dedicated to my two allergy babies, Jensen and Matilda. Jensen and Matilda are a brother and sister duo, who love having fun and enjoying days out with their family…but both Jensen and Matilda suffer from food allergies. This can make it difficult to go out and enjoy things like birthday parties. Read on to find out if Jensen and Matilda stay safe at the party and to hear if they can eat any of the delicious birthday cake!

Up early, off out A fun day without a doubt, Before the party getting ready Got everything, on your marks, get steady, Mummy packs the bags to go, Lines them all up in a row, We’re in the car and heading there, To the party without a care, Bouncy castle, bubbles and a song, What could possibly go wrong? Questions: Why did Mum need to pack extra bags?

Party games and a disco ball, Running round the great big hall, A magician and a bouncy castle, Parents relaxed there’s no hassle, Everyone is having fun, Until the party games are done, “Food time,” a mummy roars, Out of nowhere the children soar, Questions: What things could go wrong at a birthday party? What kind of things would you have at your birthday party?

Hungry tummies make a sound, Sitting down the foods passed round, Food partials spread from hands to hands, “Stay safe, stay safe!” I command, Hot dog rolls and a chocolate bar, My EpiPen is in the car, Time to get my medication, We must be safe it’s dedication, Questions: What kinds of foods would you have at your party? What is an epipen?

A packed lunch box is what we need, And somewhere safe to sit and feed, Away from all the allergy food, It gets me out the party mood, Just a few minutes to stay in my seat, Away from all the food you eat, That food will make it hard to breathe, I’ll scratch and itch and then I’ll sneeze, Questions: What would you put in a party packed lunch box?

My tummy would start to bloat, It would feel heavy in my throat, I would be so very sick, That can start so very quick, A few more minutes then, I’m back with my friends, The unsafe part of the party ends, I join in and have such fun, Then the party is then all done, Questions: What are some the symptoms of an allergic reaction?

A party bag and some cake, A freefrom one my mum did bake, My mummy has made things for me, So, I can be the same as you, you see, A fun day to have for us, I enjoyed the party with no fuss, My allergies don’t get in my way, I will not let them spoil my day!

The following pages are for the use of parents and teachers. In schools across Britian, it is the responsibility of the teachers to educate children on allergies. This book can be used as a resource to target the following educational experiences and outcomes within Scottish education. You will find lesson plans and resource worksheets that can be completed with your class.

Each stage requires parents or teachers to read the book first time out loud with the class, talk about the book and encourage open communication. Have the children retell the story to each other and share as a group. Now read the book and respond to the questions at the bottom of each page, have the children share their answers.
