Leonardo's Winter Wonderment
Leonardo, a curious young boy, experiences his first winter and Christmas in the suburbs of Chicago. Leonardo looked out the window at the falling snowflakes. It was his first winter, and everything was white and sparkling. His eyes widened with wonder. He had never seen snow before, let alone experienced the magic of Christmas.
Leonardo's mother and father had explained the Christmas traditions to him in the weeks leading up to today. They told Leo about all the magic encompassing the holiday, Santa and the North Pole. Leo listened with wide eyes and open ears. Tonight was Christmas Eve, and the excitement and anticipation felt by Leo was abundant. "I want to see Santa," he mumbled. But sleep was swiftly setting in upon him.
In the middle of the night, Leonardo woke up and tiptoed to the living room to check on the Christmas tree. It was dark, and the tree lights twinkled silently. There was no sign of Santa, but presents poured out from beneath his tree. "Where are you, Santa?" he wondered. "I hope I haven't missed him."
Leonardo began to think he may have overslept. If only he could have stayed awake longer... He hoped Santa wasn't upset he had been sleeping and not waiting to greet him with a warm hug and presentation of the Christmas cookies, milk and carrots he prepared for the jolly lot. He thought it might be best to return to bed until morning.
Suddenly, he heard a clamor from the roof! His eyes widened, and he rushed to the balcony. "Santa! Wait!" he shouted. The loudest, most jolly voice he ever heard boomed back from above, "Ho, Ho, Ho! Merry Christmas Leonardo!"
In the morning, Leonardo told his parents everything that had happened the night before. They intently listened to his excited recollections, exchanging a quick glance and muffled smile as they raised their coffee mugs to sip. "You saw Santa!" they exclaimed. Leonardo beamed with joy. His first winter and Christmas were those to never forget.
