Lexie furrowed her brow. She had seen Wright at his desk just a few minutes ago, and he had been working quietly, just like everyone else. "Wright didn’t take it!" Oliver whispered, standing beside Lexie. "I saw him in class all morning. He couldn’t have just… disappeared and stolen it." "I know," Lexie replied, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "But I need to figure out what really happened. I’ll help Wright. He doesn’t deserve to be blamed."
Before things could escalate further, Mr. Carter, their teacher, stepped outside. He was tall and had a calm, friendly presence that usually made everyone feel at ease. Today, though, his face looked more serious than usual. "Alright, everyone, let’s take a breath," Mr. Carter said, raising his hand for attention. "Chloe, Wright, I’m sure there’s a misunderstanding here. Let’s stay calm and figure this out. Class, go on and enjoy your recess, but remember—let’s not jump to conclusions. We’ll sort this out after."
"I’ll help you, Wright," Lexie said, walking over to him. "You don’t have to worry. We’ll figure out what happened to the homework. I promise." Wright nodded, a small smile forming on his face. "Thanks, Lexie. I don’t know what to say. I didn’t take it. But… no one else saw anything." Lexie thought for a moment. "Well, we need to find some clues. Let’s start by looking around. Lexie held up her notebook, where she’d already written a heading: The Case of the Missing Homework. "We’re going to figure out where Chloe’s homework went, and we’re not stopping until we do!"
Lexie spoke to Kevin next, who hesitated before speaking. " - I saw someone near Chloe’s desk during recess," he admitted.
Lexie felt a spark of hope but needed more. She searched the classroom again, finding a crumpled paper behind Chloe’s desk.
