But her feet wouldn't move. Just then, a little boy bumped into her and smiled. - Hi, I'm Max! Do you want to play? he asked.
Lily smiled back at Max, but then she saw a group of kids whispering and looking at her. She felt her face turn red. - Why are they looking at me? she wondered. She turned away and walked to the swings, feeling sad. - Maybe they don't like me because I'm new, she thought. Her heart felt heavy.
At lunchtime, Lily sat alone with her sandwich. She missed her little brother and her puppies at home. - I don't like school, she thought. She almost decided to tell her mom she wanted to go home. But then, she remembered what her mom said about being herself.
Just then, a teacher walked over and sat next to her. - Hello, Lily! Are you okay? Lily nodded but said, - I'm just feeling a little lonely. The teacher smiled and said, - Sometimes, we need to give new things a chance. Why don't you try saying hello to someone? Lily thought about it and nodded. Maybe she could try.
With the teacher's words in her heart, Lily walked back to the playground. She saw a girl sitting alone, too. Lily took a deep breath. - Hi, my name's Lily. Do you want to play with me? The girl smiled brightly and said, - Yes, I'm Emma! From that moment, Lily knew that being kind and open could bring wonderful friends.
