Each morning, as the sun came up, Amanda went into Little Gray Panthers’ room to feed her breakfast. But as soon as the door would open, Little Gray Panthers would dart out. "Little Gray Panthers, where are you going?" Amanda asked. "Oh, just to get something special," Little Gray Panthers replied with a swish of her tail.
That day, Little Gray Panthers followed a butterfly to a field of flowers. She carefully picked a little blue flower. “This will do nicely,” she purred and carried it home.
The next morning, the same thing happened. Anna opened the door, and Little Gray Panthers dashed out. "Little Gray Panthers, where are you going?" Amanda asked. "Oh, just to get something special," Little Gray Panthers replied. At the park, she spotted a shiny golden acorn. "How perfect!" she purred, holding it in her teeth.
On the third day, Amanda opened the door to feed Little Gray Panthers, but off she ran again. "Little Gray Panthers, where are you going?" Amanda asked. "Oh, just to get something special," Little Gray Panthers meowed with a hop. In the garden, she found colorful autumn leaves. "These will be lovely," she thought, bringing them inside where Amanda wouldn't see.
The fourth morning, as soon as Amanda opened the door, Little Gray Panthers scurried off once more. "Little Gray Panthers, where are you going?" Amanda asked. "Oh, just to get something special," said Little Gray Panthers as she bound up the stairs. This time, she explored the attic and found a roll of ribbon and a card with stars. "This will be perfect!" she purred.
On the fifth morning, as Amanda opened the door, Little Gray Panthers didn't run out. Amanda wondered if she felt ok, but Little Gray Panthers was too busy to explore. She worked all through the morning, tying the ribbon around the acorn, tucking the blue flower and leaves together, and attaching the card. When Amanda came in to kiss her goodnight, Little Gray Panthers nudged the gift forward. "Oh, Little Gray Panthers, it's beautiful!" said Amanda. "It's for you because I love you!" And Little Gray Panthers rubbed her head on Amanda's chin and purred.
