Mateo had just moved to a new town in Puerto Rico. He was excited but also scared because he found speaking a bit hard. He wanted to make friends, but he was worried they wouldn't understand him. One day, he overheard some kids talking about a treasure hidden in the schoolyard. Mateo decided finding this treasure would help him make friends. But how could he tell them about it without stumbling on his words?
Mateo decided to find the treasure map he heard about. He thought if he could show the map to the others, they'd help him. But the map was hidden in the old library, and Mateo didn't know the way. He tried to ask a teacher for help. - Can you...um, help...me...find...library? Mateo asked, feeling nervous.
With the teacher's guidance, Mateo found the library. There were hundreds of books and many shelves. Mateo searched for the map but couldn't find it. As he looked around, he bumped into a big stack of books. - Oh no, Mateo whispered, trying to pick them up quickly. Some older kids laughed, making him feel even more embarrassed.
Feeling overwhelmed, Mateo sat down on a bench outside. He felt like giving up. - Maybe...I...can't...do it, he said to himself sadly. He watched the other kids playing and wished he could join them. But how could he, if he couldn't even find a simple map?
Just then, an older boy named Carlos sat next to Mateo. - Hey, don't worry. I used to be scared of speaking too, Carlos said kindly. He shared how he learned to take deep breaths and speak slowly. - Let's find that map together, Carlos suggested. Mateo felt hopeful again and agreed.
