It is June and school is out for the summer. Everybody is happy. The trees have turned green. The flowers smell pretty and the grass has grown. Every Living creature is coming alive. Life seems perfect. Perfect that is, for everyone but Maxwell. Now, Maxwell is a dog and if you were happy, he would be happy too. Can you think of why Maxwell would feel sad? Maxwell lives with two little girls. Their names are Abbie and Shannon. They are so busy outside playing that they forget about playing with Maxwell. He loves to run and jump and he so much wants to be with the children. One beautiful sunshiny day as Abbie and Shannon woke up, Maxwell was wagging his tail to greet them as he always does every morning. Shannon decided that they should have a party for him. It was a great idea so they immediately started making plans. Abbie, being the oldest, made the kool-aid and baked a cake. Shannon got the dishes, cups, napkins, forks, and a bone. They set the table in the backyard then looked for some decorations. Shannon picked the prettiest flowers and Abbie found streamers to hang on the fence. What a wonderful time the two girls were having. Finally everything was ready, so Abbie, Shannon and Maxwell sat at the table. All the work had been worth it because they had the most wonderful party ever and Maxwell was THE HAPPIEST DOG that day. 3-14-91 THE END By CHERYL MOLLICA
Maxwell was excited! Today was his birthday party. He had invited all his friends and planned lots of games. But his dog, Buddy, had chewed up a very important letter. The letter was an invitation for his best friend, Emma. Without it, she might not come!
Maxwell decided to call Emma to explain. But when he picked up the phone, it didn't work. Maxwell felt sad and worried. He really wanted Emma to come. He knew he had to find another way to reach her.
Maxwell thought about running to Emma's house. But it was raining heavily outside. He didn't have an umbrella, and he was afraid of getting wet. Maxwell felt like crying. He didn't know what to do.
Maxwell sat down on the floor and sighed. Buddy licked his face, trying to cheer him up. Maxwell felt lost and thought about giving up. Maybe Emma wouldn't come to the party after all.
Then, Maxwell's mom came into the room. She saw the chewed-up letter and the broken phone. 'What's wrong, Maxwell?' she asked. Maxwell told her everything. 'Let's go to Emma's house together,' she said with a smile. 'We'll explain everything.'
Maxwell and his mom put on raincoats and walked to Emma's house. When they arrived, Maxwell told Emma the truth about the letter. Emma smiled and hugged Maxwell. 'Of course, I'll come to your party!' she said. Maxwell felt so happy and relieved.
