Carl, a brave six-year-old known as 'Carlos' to his friends, had a secret mission. He was battling leukemia. But that wasn't his only challenge. At Maysville Elementary, he had to face the mean stepmother in his dreams every night. This made him worry about going to sleep.

One day at school, Carl was too tired to join his friends in a game of tag. - Why can't you play, Carlos? his friend asked. Carl sighed. - I'm just too tired today. His friends looked confused, and Carl felt a little left out.

As the days passed, Carl noticed he was getting more tired. He had to sit out during recess and missed playing with his cootie bugs. - I wish I could just be like everyone else, he thought. Carl felt like he was missing out on all the fun. He wondered if he'd be able to play again.

One night, Carl was so tired, he didn't even want to dream. He thought about giving up his nickname, 'Carlos', and just be plain Carl. - Maybe I should just stop trying to be brave, he whispered to his cootie bugs. He felt like he was losing his courage.

The next day, Carl's teacher, Miss Lily, noticed he was unusually quiet. - Is everything okay, Carl? she asked gently. Carl explained his fear about going to sleep. Miss Lily smiled and said, - Remember, every hero needs a good rest to fight battles. Her words gave Carl a new sense of strength.

That night, Carl lay in bed, thinking about what Miss Lily said. - I can be brave, he told his cootie bugs. He closed his eyes, imagining himself as a brave knight. Carl faced the mean stepmother in his dreams and realized he had the courage to win. He woke up, feeling stronger than ever.
