In the heart of Beaverton, Oregon, 6-year-old Nehemiah finds himself in a sticky situation after accidentally breaking his mom's favorite vase. Nehemiah liked to play basketball inside the house, even though his mom always said to play outside. One day, with a big bounce, the ball hit a vase on the shelf. Crash! The vase shattered into pieces. Nehemiah's heart sank as he realized what he'd done. His mom's favorite vase was broken!
Nehemiah wanted to tell his mom, but he was scared. What if she got really mad at him? He decided to hide the pieces in a box under his bed. Maybe he could fix it later, he thought. But hiding the truth made him feel bad inside.
Nehemiah tried to tape the vase pieces together, but it didn't look right. He felt more worried when his little sister asked, " - What are you doing, Nehemiah?" How would he explain this to her? Then, his mom called, " - Nehemiah, let's have dinner!" His heart raced.
At dinner, Nehemiah couldn't enjoy his favorite spaghetti. His mom noticed, " - Is something wrong, sweetie?" He wanted to tell her so badly. But the words were stuck. Maybe it was better to give up and not tell her at all.
Later that night, Grandpa visited and saw Nehemiah's worried face. " - You know," Grandpa said, " - it's always best to be honest, even if it's hard." Nehemiah thought about this. He realized being honest was important, just like Grandpa said.
The next morning, Nehemiah took a deep breath and told his mom everything. " - I'm sorry, Mom," he said, " - I broke your vase." His mom hugged him tight. " - Thank you for telling me the truth, Nehemiah. I love you no matter what." Nehemiah felt a warm glow of relief and happiness.
