Pa Thao, an 8-year-old girl, faces a daunting problem when she moves from a Thai refugee camp to Minnesota. She must find courage to be able to push through life's hardships to be able to succeed in her new home country.
Pa Thao was a brave girl who had just moved to Wisconsin from Thailand. She was surrounded by things she had never seen or heard, like English. The biggest problem for Pa Thao was the fear of speaking English. After a couple of days living in Wisconsin, Pa and her family moved to Minnesota to live with her Uncle Lee. As they left Wisconsin, Pa's heart raced at the thought of what her new home would be like.
Once settled in Pa was touring her new town and she noticed all of the houses had pumpkins on the porches, "Why are there pumpkins everywhere?" she asked uncle Lee. Uncle Lee responded, "That's how Americans celebrate Halloween." Pa was still confused but understood the meaning behind these pumpkins. She was in a new country, a new home.
After a few years of living in Minnesota, Pa Thao's parents sat her down and told her their sponsor had passed away. Her parents were very sad because they had grown very close to their sponsor. Their sponsor had helped them get a visa and adapt to America's norms, which they weren't used to. Pa was very sad to hear this news but had to push through.
Pa lived the rest of her life in Minnesota, and 10 years later, she had a son. Raising a child in a new country isn’t easy, Pa thought to herself. She was raising him by herself and had to do everything with him. She took him to work with her, she had to get up extra early to take him to school because if they missed the bus, there was no other way to get to school. She never went out with any friends, and she worked hard to give him a great future.
With courage from his mother, Pa's son John Thao became very successful. Seeing his mother accomplish so many things in a place where she didn't even speak the native language is very inspiring for John. He will do great things and work very hard every day, all thanks to his mom who never gave up.
Pa looks back on the hardships she faced and is very proud she pushed through. Thanks to her persistence, Pa was able to better her English with the help of her Uncle Lee. She worked very hard for many years so that her son John Thao could live an amazing life without having to experience fleeing his home country and adapting to a new one.
