As the clock ticked, Rivey tried her best to keep her eyes open. "I won't fall asleep, not tonight," she whispered. But her eyelids felt heavy, and she yawned. The soft lullaby of the wind made her even sleepier. "Maybe just a little nap," she thought, but she quickly shook her head. Staying awake was harder than she imagined.
Rivey decided to walk around her room to stay awake. She tiptoed to the window, peeking outside. "It's so quiet... too quiet," she said with a sigh. Then, she heard a creak from the hallway. "Is that Santa?" she gasped, running to check. But it was just the house settling. Her heart sank a little with each false alarm.
Rivey sat back on her bed, feeling a bit sad. "Maybe I'll never see Santa," she said to her teddy bear. She thought about giving up and going to sleep. "But I've tried so hard," she sighed. Her eyes were droopy, and the bed felt so comfy. It seemed that meeting Santa might stay just a dream.
Just then, Rivey's mom came into the room. "Why so glum, sweetie?" she asked softly. Rivey explained her dilemma. "Maybe you can leave a special gift for Santa," her mom suggested with a wink. "A gift? Like what?" Rivey asked, curious. "Something from the heart," her mom replied, smiling.
Rivey decided to draw a picture for Santa. "He'll love this, I'm sure!" she exclaimed, feeling excited. She used bright colors and lots of glitter. When she finished, she placed it by the cookies. "Now he'll know I stayed up for him," she smiled. That night, she felt the true magic of Christmas.
