Once upon a time in Cape Town, South Africa, lived a happy brown dog named Simbali. He had one ear straight up and one hanging down. Simbali loved playing with the children in his family. He would wag his tail and bark joyfully. But one day, something strange happened.
The family started losing important items. First, Dad's keys went missing. Then, Mom's favorite bracelet vanished. Everyone was puzzled. Simbali felt it was his duty to solve the mystery. He wanted to be the family's hero.
Simbali decided to search the backyard first. He sniffed around the garden and near his kennel. Suddenly, he heard a rustling sound. He ran towards the bushes.
- What did you find, Sim? Mom asked.
But it was just a squirrel! Simbali sighed and kept looking. He didn’t find anything in the backyard. Simbali felt a little sad, but he didn’t give up. He knew he had to keep searching.
Next, Simbali decided to check the front yard. He sniffed near the gate and the flower beds. He found a small hole under the fence. Simbali thought maybe the thief used it to get in.
Simbali tried to squeeze through the hole but got stuck. He wiggled and wiggled, but he couldn’t get through. He barked for help.
- Oh no! Sim, are you okay? Dad asked.
Dad helped him out of the hole. Simbali was covered in dirt but still happy. He wagged his tail and licked Dad’s face. Simbali decided to search inside the house next.
Inside the house, Simbali sniffed around the living room and kitchen. He found nothing unusual. Sim saw the children playing with their toys.
- Sim, do you want to play with us? the children asked.
Simbali wanted to play, but he had to find the thief. He felt like giving up. Maybe he wasn’t a great hero after all.
Just then, Grandma called Simbali. She had a wise look in her eyes. - Sim, I think I know where to look, she said. She took Simbali to the attic.
In the attic, Simbali discovered a small opening behind some old boxes. He sniffed inside and found all the missing items! The thief was a clever raccoon!
