Tấm and Cám: A Vietnamese Folktale

Justice Watercolor style

In ancient Vietnam, a kind-hearted girl named Tấm is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsister, Cám. Her life changes when she meets a spiritual figure, Bụt, who offers her hope and guidance. As Tấm faces betrayal, loss, and danger, she must find the strength to overcome her challenges and seek justice. Will Tấm's resilience and virtue lead her to triumph over adversity?

In a peaceful Vietnamese village, Tấm lived with her cruel stepmother and lazy stepsister, Cám. While Tấm toiled in the rice fields, Cám enjoyed a carefree life. Tấm longed for a fair chance to pursue her dreams, but her family held her back. One day, their father passed away, leaving Tấm at the mercy of her stepmother. - Why must I suffer so? Tấm wondered, tears in her eyes.

Tấm's stepmother devised a plan to further burden her. "You must gather shrimp from the river today," she ordered. Obediently, Tấm set off with her basket, determined to succeed. But Cám had other ideas. - Come, Tấm, let's bathe in the river, Cám suggested with a sly smile.

While Tấm bathed, Cám stole her basket of shrimp, leaving her empty-handed. Devastated, Tấm sat by the river, tears streaming down her face. - What will I do now? she cried, her voice echoing in the quiet. Just then, a gentle voice spoke to her. It was Bụt, a spiritual figure offering guidance.

Bụt comforted Tấm and gifted her a small goby fish to keep her company. - This fish will bring you joy, he assured her with a kind smile. Tấm cared for the fish in secret, finding solace in its presence. But soon, her stepmother discovered the fish and had it cooked for dinner. Heartbroken once more, Tấm buried the bones under the moonlit sky.

To Tấm's surprise, the fish bones transformed into beautiful garments and a horse. - I can finally attend the village festival, Tấm exclaimed, her heart full of hope. As she arrived, her beauty captivated everyone, including the King. But in her excitement, she lost a slipper in a stream. The King declared he would marry the woman whose foot fit the slipper.

Tấm's heart soared as the King's servants searched for her. But at home, her stepmother plotted against her once more. - You'll never be found, her stepmother sneered, hiding the slipper. Despite the deceit, Tấm's foot fit the slipper perfectly when the King arrived. She became Queen, yet her trials were far from over.

As Queen, Tấm returned home for her father's memorial. Her stepmother tricked her into climbing an areca tree, then cruelly chopped it down. Tấm's life ended tragically, leaving her spirit to wander. - Is this truly my fate? she lamented, feeling lost and alone. But her journey was not over, as her spirit lingered, seeking justice.

Tấm's spirit found new life as an oriole, then as trees, and finally as a golden apple. - I must find my way back, her spirit whispered, longing for peace. An old woman discovered the golden apple and cared for it lovingly. Through her kindness, Tấm was reborn in human form. Her heart ached to reunite with the King.

In the palace garden, Tấm revealed herself to the King. - I've returned, my love, she declared, her voice filled with hope. The King embraced her, joy and relief flooding his heart. Tấm's stepmother and Cám faced the consequences of their actions. Finally, justice was served, and Tấm's spirit found peace.

With her trials behind her, Tấm ruled as Queen with wisdom and compassion. Her story became a legend, reminding all of the power of kindness and justice. - We must always strive for what is right, Tấm advised, her voice carrying wisdom. Her journey inspired many, teaching that virtue and resilience triumph over adversity. And so, Tấm's spirit lived on, a beacon of hope for generations.
