The Demon of Meaun

Honesty Pixar style

In the heart of the Guatemalan jungle, two Mayan brothers, Ixbalanque and Hunahpu, find themselves in a tricky situation. As they try to outsmart the god of Meaun, they learn the importance of honesty in a quest filled with unexpected twists and turns.

In a jungle clearing by a river in Guatemala, Ixbalanque and his brother Hunahpu faced a big problem. The god of Meaun, who loved hunting crabs by the river, was causing trouble for their village. The brothers decided to lure him into a trap to stop his mischief. They began crafting a large fake crab out of stones, sticks, and smoldering embers. But as they finished, the crab looked more like a turtle.

As they were completing the fake crab-turtle, the god of Meaun arrived at the river. He saw them working and approached them with curiosity. The brothers were startled and didn't know what to say. The god of Meaun greeted them amicably and asked what they were doing. Hunahpu quickly lied, saying they were making a fake turtle to lure the demon of Meaun.

The god of Meaun was intrigued and offered to help the brothers trap the demon. He suggested they hide in the bushes and wait for the demon to come. Ixbalanque and Hunahpu, feeling trapped by their lie, reluctantly agreed. They all hid in the bushes, watching the fake crab-turtle. Hours passed, but no demon appeared.

Ixbalanque began to lose hope. He whispered to his brother, feeling guilty about their lie. - Maybe we should just tell the truth, Ixbalanque said. - But what if he gets angry? Hunahpu replied. The god of Meaun, sensing their unease, asked what was wrong. The brothers hesitated, fearing the consequences of their dishonesty.

At that moment, Ixbalanque had an epiphany. He realized that honesty was the only way out of their predicament. - We need to tell him the truth, Ixbalanque said firmly. - You're right, Hunahpu agreed. They turned to the god of Meaun and confessed their lie. The god of Meaun listened patiently, surprising them with his calm response.

The god of Meaun smiled and nodded. - It takes courage to admit your mistakes, he said. - I admire your honesty. The brothers felt a weight lift off their shoulders. The god of Meaun promised to stop causing trouble for their village. With a newfound respect for honesty, Ixbalanque and Hunahpu returned home, grateful for the lesson they had learned.
