The Hunter and Selu

Charity

In the middle ages of the Cherokee Nation, a young girl named Selu and her hunter friend face a tough challenge. The hunter can't find any game, and their village is hungry. Guided by a magical corn plant, Selu learns the value of charity and helping others.

Selu lived in a small village in the Cherokee Nation. She had long brown hair and wore a dress made of cornstalks. Her best friend was a hunter who couldn't find any game. The village was hungry, and everyone was worried. Selu wanted to help but didn't know how.

The hunter had been searching all day but found nothing. He was tired and sad. Selu saw him and asked, - Why are you so sad? The hunter replied, - I can't find any food for our village. Selu felt sad too and wanted to help.

The hunter went to sleep by a fire he made in a hollow stump. In the middle of the night, he heard beautiful singing. - What is that? he wondered. The singing seemed to come from the forest. He decided to look for it in the morning.

The next day, the hunter still found no game. At night, he heard the singing again. - This must be real! he said. Before daylight, he followed the sound and found a green stalk of corn. The corn plant spoke to him, telling him to take its roots home.

Selu saw the hunter carrying the corn roots. - What is that? she asked. The hunter explained, - The corn plant told me to chew these roots and 'go to water' before sunrise. Selu watched as he did what the corn plant said.

The hunter went into the woods again and found many deer. He brought lots of food back to the village. - Thank you, Selu said. The hunter replied, - The corn plant taught me to share. The village was happy, and Selu learned the importance of helping others.
