In the heart of the woods, a strong-willed princess named Pocotopaug faces a daunting challenge: finding a suitor through a competitive trial.
This is a tale that was told to me by my father, and his father before him and so on and so on. This tale comes from the Northeast part of the country from a small native American tribe called the Wongunks. Legend has it that the Princess of the Wongunk tribe named Princess Pocotopaug had come of age and was to be married.
Princess Pocotopaug was considered the most beautiful woman in all the land. She was kind and caring and loved by the entire tribe. But according to the tribes customs all men of a certain age would have to compete for her hand in marriage. And at this time there were only two men who were eligible to marry the princess. and The first man eligible was Little Feather. Everyone loved Little Feather. Little feather was very smart and really kind hearted. Little feather got his name from a tribal custom of climbing to the top of the great hill and taking a tail feather from an eagle. The feather he brought back was a very little feather.
The second man eligible was named Falling Rocks. Falling Rocks got his name as a small child when his parents noticed the young boy loved to throw rocks. He was the strongest and fastest man in the village but he was also a very mean man who was not very well liked in the village. Now since Falling Rocks was one month older than Little Feather and according to tribe custom he was to decide how they would compete. There were two choices of competition that the tribe had agreed upon.
The first choice was a horse race to the Great river, build a canoe and paddle back to the to the trail that was a long run back home to the village near the large waters and the finish line. The second choice was a foot race to the The great Split Rock and then run over the hill of Hogs trail and over the pass to the Chestnut stream and back to the village near the large waters.
Little feather and Princess Pocotopaug have been best of friends since childhood and the princess loved litttle Feather so much and had thought that she would like to marry him some day. Little feather knew that he could only beat Falling Rocks if he could out smart him, Because Falling Rocks was so very strong.
With honesty as their guide, Pocotopaug and Falling Rock overcome the final trial. The suitor is chosen, not for strength, but for integrity. - We've done it, Pocotopaug exclaims, joy lighting up her face. The tribe celebrates, having witnessed the power of truth and perseverance. Peace and harmony return to Pocotopaug's realm.
