Things My Mother Taught Me

Courage Pixar style

A heartwarming story about a young woman's journey to find courage through the lessons her mother taught her, despite encountering numerous obstacles that test her resolve.

At the age of twenty, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of what path to take in life. "I wish I had your courage, Mom," I confessed one evening. My mother had always been a source of strength for me, teaching lessons that had shaped my childhood. However, faced with a daunting decision about my future, I felt paralyzed with fear. "If only I knew what to do," I sighed, hoping for guidance.

I recalled my first lesson in courage when I was six, trying to ride a bike without training wheels. "You can do it," my mother encouraged, holding the back of the bike as I wobbled. I fell multiple times, each crash more painful than the last, testing my resolve. "Maybe I'm not meant to ride," I cried, ready to give up. "Remember, courage isn't about not falling," she said, "it's about getting back up."

As I pondered my future, memories of more lessons flooded back. I remembered the time I stood up for a friend at school. "Stand by those you care about," my mother advised, seeing my hesitation. That day, I faced taunts and ridicule from others. "What if they don't stop?" I worried aloud. "Courage means doing what's right, even when it's hard," she reminded me.

In the present, doubts continued to plague me. "What if I make the wrong choice?" I asked, feeling overwhelmed. My mother's words echoed in my mind, yet the fear seemed insurmountable. "I can't do this," I thought, considering giving up on my dreams. "Perhaps I'm just not strong enough," I admitted in defeat.

One evening, as I sat with my thoughts, my mother joined me. "Remember when you learned to swim?" she asked gently. I nodded, recalling the terror of deep water. "You were scared, but you dove in anyway," she smiled, handing me a journal she had kept of my childhood achievements. "Courage grows with every challenge you face," she said, pointing to a page where I had written about my fears and triumphs.

With renewed determination, I decided to face my fears. "I'll give it my best shot," I declared, feeling a flicker of courage ignite within me. My mother's teachings had always been there, guiding me through life's challenges. "I'm proud of you," she said, beaming with pride. Embracing the lessons of courage, I stepped forward, ready to embrace whatever came my way.
