Where is the Apple?

Charity Pixar style

Reuben Magogo, an 8-year-old boy from Zambia, steals his teacher Ms. Chola's apple and hides it. As he faces obstacles and struggles with guilt, he learns the value of honesty and charity.

Reuben Magogo was an 8-year-old boy in Grade 3 who lived in a small village in Zambia. One sunny morning, Ms. Chola, his teacher, brought a shiny red apple to class. Reuben's stomach growled at the sight of the apple because he hadn't eaten breakfast. He wanted the apple so badly that he decided to steal it when no one was looking. After recess, Ms. Chola noticed her apple was missing and asked the class, 'Where is the apple?'

Reuben quickly hid the apple in his backpack, hoping no one would find out. But his best friend, Temba, saw him take it. - Reuben, why did you take the apple? Temba asked. - I was hungry, Reuben whispered. Temba looked worried and said, - You should give it back. - I can't, Reuben replied, feeling scared.

Ms. Chola decided to search everyone's backpacks. Reuben's heart raced as she got closer to his desk. - What if she finds it? Reuben thought. Ms. Chola checked his backpack and found the apple. - Reuben, why did you take my apple? she asked. - I was hungry, he admitted, looking down at his feet.

- I'm disappointed, Reuben, Ms. Chola said gently. Reuben felt tears welling up in his eyes. - I'm sorry, he said. Ms. Chola sighed and said, - As a punishment, you'll have to eat this loaf of dry bread during lunch. Reuben looked at the bread and felt his hunger grow stronger. - I can't eat this, he thought.

During lunch, Reuben sat alone with his loaf of bread. Temba approached him and said, - You know, Reuben, you could have just asked for food. Ms. Chola is kind. Reuben thought about it and realized Temba was right. - I should have asked, he said. Reuben decided to apologize to Ms. Chola and ask for help.

Reuben went to Ms. Chola and said, - I'm really sorry for stealing your apple. I was so hungry, and I didn't know what to do. Ms. Chola smiled and said, - Apology accepted, Reuben. But remember, you can always ask for help. From that day on, Reuben learned to ask for help when he needed it and shared what he had with others. He realized that honesty and charity were more important than satisfying his hunger.
