Black Boy, I Am

Courage Watercolor style

Clyde, a courageous 8-year-old boy, faces the challenge of overcoming his fear of the dark. With the help of his family and a newfound inner strength, Clyde learns that courage is about confronting fears, not avoiding them.

Clyde loved everything about his home, but there was one thing that troubled him. He was scared of the dark, especially in his own room at night. This fear made him feel small and powerless. Clyde wanted to be brave like his older brother, but the shadows seemed to have a life of their own. He decided he needed to find a way to conquer his fear.

One night, Clyde decided to stay up late to face his fear. He tiptoed to the hallway, but a creaky floorboard stopped him. His heart raced, and he quickly ran back to his room, feeling defeated. - Why can't I just be brave? Clyde sighed. He realized he had to find another way to tackle the darkness.

The next day, Clyde made a plan. He gathered every flashlight he could find, determined to chase away the shadows. But then, all the batteries died at once. - Not again! Clyde groaned, feeling like the darkness was winning. He needed a new idea, something that didn't rely on flashlights.

That night, Clyde felt like giving up. He flopped onto his bed and stared at the ceiling. - Maybe I'm just not brave enough, he whispered to himself. He was about to close his eyes when his mom peeked in to check on him. - Courage isn't about not being scared, Clyde, she said. - It's about facing your fears.

Clyde thought about his mom's words. He decided to try something different. He took a deep breath and slowly walked through the house, talking to the shadows as if they were friends. Something surprising happened; the shadows seemed less scary. - I can do this, Clyde said, feeling a new sense of courage.

Clyde's newfound courage stayed with him. Each night, the darkness seemed less daunting. - I'm not afraid of you anymore, Clyde declared to the shadows. He realized that he was brave all along, and it was his courage that made the shadows shrink away. Clyde had conquered his fear of the dark, proving to himself that he was truly courageous.
