Carly was excited to start second grade in her California suburb. She loved making new friends, but today felt different. Carly had heard about a new girl named Alex who lived on her street. She was determined to find Alex and make a new friend. However, Carly didn't know what Alex looked like yet! This was the beginning of an important mission.
During recess, Carly searched the playground for a new face. She wanted to meet Alex, but there were so many kids! Carly felt a little overwhelmed and wasn't sure how to start. She thought maybe she should ask around. But what if Alex didn't want to be friends?
Carly decided to ask her friend Mia if she had seen Alex. - Have you seen the new girl, Alex? Carly asked Mia. - I think she was wearing a blue dress, Mia replied. Carly felt hopeful and began looking for a girl in a blue dress. But there were several girls wearing blue!
Carly approached one of the girls in a blue dress, hoping it was Alex. - Hi, are you Alex? Carly asked nervously. - No, I'm Emma, the girl replied with a smile. Carly's heart sank a little. How would she ever find Alex in this big playground?
Carly tried a few more times, asking different girls if they were Alex. Each time, the answer was the same: No. Carly began to worry that she might never find Alex. She imagined all the fun they could have together, and it made her more determined. But what if she never found Alex?
Carly noticed a girl sitting alone by the slide. Maybe this was Alex! - Hi! Are you Alex? she asked, trying to sound cheerful. - No, but I wish I was, the girl chuckled. Carly couldn't help but giggle. It was getting tricky, but she wouldn't give up.
Feeling a bit tired, Carly sat on a bench to think. She wondered if Alex was even at school today. As the sun began to set, Carly felt defeated. Maybe finding her new friend was impossible. She wished she had asked her teacher for help earlier.
Carly considered giving up and waiting for another chance to meet Alex. She felt a little silly for making it such a big deal. But something inside told her not to give up just yet. What if Alex was looking for her too?
Just then, Carly remembered a special restaurant on her street that had air hockey. She loved playing there! Maybe Alex liked playing too. It was worth a try, and maybe they'd both end up there after school!
The next day, Carly went to the restaurant with her family. To her surprise, she saw a girl playing air hockey alone. - Hi, are you Alex? Carly asked, feeling a spark of hope. - Yes! And you must be Carly! Alex replied with a big smile. They both laughed, happy to finally meet each other!
