When she got home she asked the doorman, Mr. Bob, if he had seen them. “No, I haven’t seen them for quite a while.” He said. “Would you like to leave them a message?” “Yes sir.” She says. “Please tell them I have found something wonderful.” “Okay, Princess.” He says. “I will let them know right away. Where are you going now?” “I am going back to work, I need to hurry so I don’t miss my partner. He really worries about me when I’m not on time. I’ll see you later, Mr. Bob.” On her way to work with her crown, she stops at a school and watches for a short time. Kids are playing on the see-saw, sliding board, and swings. She thinks to herself, that really looks like a lot of fun but not for me, I must make it back to work. When she sees her partner Mr. Wilbur, and his hotdog stand, she asks how he is doing today. “I am doing fine. I see you are running a little late. I was getting worried about you getting here.” Title; Junk Princess “I am so sorry, Mr. Wilbur.” Princess says. “I am so excited right now, I found something wonderful, and you are not going to believe it. Look, Mr. Wilbur, just look at this beautiful crown. It fits right on my head, what do you think about my crown?” “It is a beautiful crown, and you look like a princess with it on your head. Where did you find such a beautiful crown, Princess?” “You know how I look for junk toys every morning? Today I went to the dumpster that sits behind the 10th street library. I always have trouble getting into that one. Only, this time I found some milk cartons and stacked them on top of each other. I climbed my way into the dumpster and as I was looking through the rubbish, there it was. Shining through the garbage, I could hardly leave it, and it was just for me.” She explains. “Mr. Wilbur, can you believe I found my own princess crown? How do I look in it?” “You look like a little princess.” He says. “You better get to work little princess, the rush crowd is about to come.” So, princess gets everything ready to sell on her little table. She has little dolls, books, and all kinds of toys to sell. She pulls up her stool and sits down, getting ready for all the customers that are coming. Mr. Wilbur is getting his hotdog card ready. “It’s almost time to sell your hotdogs. They are going to smell really good Mr. Wilbur.” Princess says. “They are making me very hungry.” “Would you like to have one?” He asks. “Yes sir.” Princess replies. Title; Junk Princess Mr. Wilbur makes her a very special hotdog with chips and a drink. “Here you go Princess, enjoy.” He says. She was so hungry she forgot to say thank you. As she is munching on her hotdog and potato chips, some of the kids and a teacher from school came down to get some hotdogs from Mr. Wilbur. “Are the hotdogs ready?” The teacher asked. “Yes, they are.” Mr. Wilbur says. “How many would you like?” “Well, there’s 15 kids with me today, so that’ll be 15 hotdogs, drinks, and chips, please.” “Coming right up.” Mr. Wilbur says. Some of the kids walked over to Princess’ table and asked how much the little dolls were. “They’re just 15 cents each. How many would you like?” She asked eagerly. “How much for all of them?” One of the little girls asked. Princess began to count her toys. “You really want all of it?” She asked. “All of it.” Princess begins to count again. “Let me figure this out. I’ve never had anyone ask me for all of it.” “Come on, give me the price, how much for all of your toys?” Princess goes over to Mr. Wilbur and whispers in his ear. “How much is it, Mr. Wilbur? I can’t count that high, can you please help me?” Title; Junk Princess Mr. Wilbur is very busy with customers all around him. He really wants to help her, he just can’t do it at the moment. So the kids begin to pick on Princess, saying if she can’t count, it’s her problem. “Come on, let’s go, she can’t count.” They were very mean to Princess, but she did have a problem, she could not count very well. As the kids began to leave, one of the little girls that was with them spoke to Princess. “Maybe I will come back after school if you are still here, then I will buy all of your toys.” “Okay.” Princess replied, but as the little girl began to walk away, Princess cried. “What’s wrong?” Mr. Wilbur asked. “Why are they making fun of me?” Princess asked him. “I don’t understand. It just hurts so much, Mr. Wilbur.” She cries. “Well, Princess, kids can be hurtful. But I don’t think they mean to be, they just are. Get your things together, it’s almost time for us to pack up and leave.” As Princess begins to pack up her toys to leave the corner, she sees her mom and dad coming to get her. She runs and grabs her mom and hugs her tight. “What’s wrong, little princess?” Her mom asks. “The kids from school came to get hotdogs, and they were being mean to me. I don’t think I want to be out here selling toys tomorrow.” Her dad picks her up into his arms, and tells her a story. Title; Junk Princess “When I was a little boy,” He begins. “I was picked on by some boys in our neighborhood just because I didn’t look as good as they did in their clothes. You see Princess, my mom and dad did not have a lot of money to buy me new clothes. So, they took me to the Salvation Army to buy my clothes. I didn’t know any better. The clothes they were buying me were for school. But it was the best that they could do at the time. Those kids did not understand bad times because their parents could buy them new clothes. So don’t cry my little Princess, one day, things will get better for our family.” The all said goodbye to Mr. Wilbur and went back to the shelter for the night. When Princess got back to the shelter, it was time for them to eat their dinner. She looks up at her mom and dad as they began to eat. “Mom, Dad, don’t worry about me, I am going to be okay, and do you know why?” She asked them. “Because Daddy really helped me to understand why those kids were being so mean to me today. Tonight, when I go to bed, I am going to say a very special prayer for them, isn’t that right, Mom?” “Yes it is my little Princess, you are absolutely right. You pray for them because they truly need it. Finish up your dinner Princess, soon it will be time for bed.” “Yes, Mom.” Prince says. When Princess finished eating her dinner, she brushed her teeth and gets ready for bed. After she changed into her pajamas, she kneeled down and began to pray. “Lord Jesus, please help those kids that came to the hotdog cart today. They really need your help, I don’t think they’re bad kids, I just think they you in their lives, I know I do. By the way, thanks you for Title; Junk Princess showing me the princess crown, I really needed it. Thank you ever so much, in Jesus’ name I pray, amen. Good night Jesus.” Off to sleep she went. The next morning, they all get up from their sleep. Princess hurries to the bathroom to wash her face and get ready for her day. “This is going to be a wonderful day.” She says. “I am not going to let those kids bother me again,” Her mom says to her. ”You better get a move on, Princess, we have a long day ahead of us. Get your things and let’s go.” The doorman comes looking for their whole family and tells them there is a strange man at the gate asking for them. “What does he want?” He mom and dad ask. “He did not say, I think you better come and see him.” They follow him to the man at the gate. Mom and Dad look a little worried about who this man is, they almost don’t want to go and see him. “What can we do for you?” They ask. “My name is Mr. Dudley, I am with the schoolboard. I am here to get your daughter to school right away. How long has she out of school?” He asks. “Well,” The dad says. “Since the pandemic hit our community, it has been hard for her to get to school. I lost my job working at the mall. My wife was a stay-at-home mom. We ended up losing our home, which is not far from here. It’s been really difficult for us to maintain our livelihood. My wife and I go out every day looking for work, but it’s been difficult to find work Title; Junk Princess at this time. I believe my job will call me back to work soon. Until then, we live here for the time being. It’s our fault Princess is not in school, our clothes aren’t in the best shape and it’s very embarrassing.” “That is a sad story.” My Dudley says. “I think I might be able to help you and your family. I do work for the schoolboard, but I also have my own little business. I invest in the real estate market and I really want to help you guys out, I have some apartments and I could really use a handyman that can do some work around the complex. If you are willing to do that, I will let your family stay in one of the units. How does that sound?” “That sounds like God is trying to help us move forward. It will be my honor and a great pleasure to help you as you are helping us. We thank you very much, Mr. Dudley, you have saved my family.” His wife and Princess hug each other in celebration. “Let me show you where you and your family will be living.” As they hop into Mr. Dudley’s car to go to their new home, he explains to them that he will pay them for their work so they will be able to buy Princess new clothes for school. A few days later, they take Princess to school for the first time in a very long time. Princess’ mom looks at her and says. “Princess, you be a very good girl today, okay? I love you very much, have a blessed day.” Her dad tells her. “I told you everything was going to be okay Princess.” “Yes you did Daddy, and thank you very much for being my dad. I’ll see you guys later, I love you!” Title; Junk Princess When she gets to the lunchroom, she sees the girl she met on the corner with her toys. Princess waves at her and the girl motions for her to come over to the table where she was sitting. “Hi, I’m Susan, welcome to Zachary Elementary. What’s your name?” The girl asks. “I’m Princess.” “This is a great school, you’re going to love it here Princess. By the way, did you figure out how much all of your toys cost?” “Yes, I did.” Princess says. “It will cost five dollars. How does that sound to you?” “That sounds fantastic. I will bring you the money tomorrow.” Susan says. “And I will bring the toys tomorrow.” The End
Princess, a seven-year-old girl with African American hair and glasses, loved exploring dumpsters for hidden treasures. She lived on the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, and always wore a cap. One day, she found an old, dusty doll with a missing arm. It was the best treasure she'd ever found. But the next morning, the doll was gone!
Princess was heartbroken. She searched everywhere, but the doll was nowhere to be found. She asked her friend, Timmy, if he'd seen it. Timmy shook his head. Princess felt like crying.
Princess decided to ask the people in her neighborhood if they'd seen her doll. She walked up to Mr. Johnson, the kindly shopkeeper. - Have you seen my doll? It's old and dusty with a missing arm. Mr. Johnson shook his head. - I'm sorry, Princess. I haven't seen it.
Princess then approached Mrs. Green, who always had a smile for her. - Mrs. Green, have you seen my doll? It’s very special to me. Mrs. Green thought for a moment and said, - I haven’t seen it, dear. But I’ll keep an eye out. Princess nodded sadly.
Princess felt like she was getting nowhere. She decided to check the park where she often played. She looked under benches, behind bushes, and even asked a group of kids playing on the swings. But no one had seen her doll. - This is hopeless, she thought.
The next day, Princess saw a group of older kids from school. She mustered up her courage and approached them. - Have any of you seen my doll? It’s really important to me. One of the boys laughed and said, - Why are you looking for trash? Princess felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment.
Determined not to give up, Princess went to the library to make a poster about her lost doll. She drew a picture of it and wrote, 'Have you seen this doll?' She hoped someone would recognize it and help her find it. She posted it on the library's bulletin board.
Days passed, and Princess checked the bulletin board every day. But there were no messages about her doll. She felt like crying again. - Maybe I should just give up, she whispered to herself. She didn't know what else to do.
One rainy afternoon, Princess sat under a bridge, feeling completely defeated. Her friend Timmy found her and sat down next to her. - Don’t give up, Princess. We’ll find your doll. Princess shook her head. - I don’t think we will, Timmy.
Just as Princess was about to give up, she remembered something her mom used to say. - When things seem impossible, look at them from a different angle. Maybe she needed to think differently about where to find the doll.
Princess decided to talk to people she hadn't asked before. She approached Mrs. Lee, who ran the community center. - Mrs. Lee, have you seen an old doll? Mrs. Lee smiled warmly. - I haven’t, but let’s ask around. Maybe someone at the community center has seen it.
Together, they asked everyone at the community center. One little girl named Amy said, - I saw a doll like that! It was with a man who collects old things. Princess felt a spark of hope.
Princess rushed to the man’s house with Mrs. Lee. She knocked on the door, and the man answered. - Excuse me, sir. Do you have an old doll with a missing arm? The man looked surprised. - Yes, I found it in the trash. Why do you ask?
- It’s my doll, Princess explained. - It’s very special to me. The man smiled kindly. - I didn’t know it belonged to someone. Here you go. Princess took the doll and hugged it tightly. - Thank you so much!
Princess learned an important lesson that day. She realized that asking for help and understanding others were important. She also knew that her community cared about her. - Thank you, everyone, she said. - I couldn’t have done this without you.
From that day on, Princess felt more connected to her community. She continued to find treasures in dumpsters, but now she shared her finds with others. She knew that even if something seemed like junk, it could be a treasure to someone else. And that was the best treasure of all. Junk Princess Once upon a time, there was a girl named Princess.
