The Numbers in Aqui's Feelings
Aqui is a curious 4-year-old who loves playing at the park. But when he trips on the wobbly bridge and scrapes his knee, he feels overwhelmed by big, scary feelings. With the help of his parents, Aqui learns a clever way to make those feelings smaller, finding courage to face new adventures.
It's a sunny day, and Aqui is excited as he walks to the park with his mom and dad. The park is full of fun things: a bright red slide, a wobbly bridge, and swings that fly high in the air. Aqui loves the swings the most. But today, he wants to try the wobbly bridge. As he steps onto it, he feels a little scared but also excited. He must cross it to reach the slide on the other side.
Aqui takes a step onto the wobbly bridge, then another, but suddenly he trips! He falls and scrapes his knee. Ouch! Tears well up in his eyes, and he feels upset. The bridge seems scarier now. - Are you okay, Aqui? his mom asks, rushing to his side.
Aqui's knee hurts, and he's angry that he fell. He's scared he might fall again if he tries. His mom kneels beside him, gently cleaning his knee. - Oh, Aqui, it's okay to feel upset when you fall, she says. But Aqui's feelings don't go away. They feel big and scary. - I don't like these feelings, Aqui says softly.
Aqui thinks maybe he should just give up and go home. The wobbly bridge seems too hard to cross. His dad sits beside him, noticing his frown. - You're feeling a lot of big feelings, huh? he asks gently. Aqui nods, feeling overwhelmed. Maybe he's not brave enough.
His dad has an idea. - You know how you count to ten when you're excited? Let's try counting backward from ten when you're feeling this way. It might help, he suggests. Aqui sniffles and nods, taking a deep breath. Together, they count: - Ten, says his dad, and Aqui repeats, - Ten. With each number, Aqui feels a little calmer.
As they reach one, Aqui feels much better. The big feelings are smaller now. His mom puts a colorful bandage on his knee. - See? You're a brave explorer, she says with a smile.
